Loved by Caramels

Our wonderful oceanographer friend Peter has been studying phytoplankton for more than 20 years (because that’s the sort of thing oceanographers do). Besides having a fascination for microscopic sea creatures, Peter is also a talented musician and fine woodworker who makes the most lovely, graceful furniture.

Artie, by contrast, doesn’t know a dinoflagellate from a diatom. Also, he’s not much of a woodworker (yet). Also, he can’t carry a tune in a bucket. This last failing is particularly regrettable, as anyone who has ever heard Artie try to sing will attest.

But I digress. As I was about to say…

Along with all his other admirable qualities, Peter has a keen appreciation for caramel. So the Hasslefactory recently sent a fresh box his way.

Three Yummy Caramels

A few days later, this note showed up:

Those caramels were amazing! I mean, AMAZING! I took a couple to work yesterday in my lunch. I get to work about 7:20, and I’m hungry by about 9:30. So I took out a caramel. I’d been working really hard, and my shoulders were stiff, my eyes were sore, and I was feeling that low level of stress that you get when you know you’re not going to get everything done.

I held your caramel in my hand. Such amazing detail to the wrapping. Every one of these little rhomboids of deliciousness wrapped by hand. The thought and the care that went into it.I unwrapped it and put it in my mouth. A slight butteriness on my fingers. Then an overwhelming sweet, butter, pecan flavor spread through my mouth like the warmth from a fire after a cold day skiing through the woods.

And I got this amazing feeling of being loved. Sort of hard to explain. But the thought of the care, energy, thoughtfulness and kindness that you imbued in those caramels just poured out of them. It was really nice, and completely relaxing. I don’t know if it’ll happen again, but I brought a couple of caramels today, just in case.┬áIt was just extraordinarily wonderful of you to do that for us. Thank you.

And there you have it. Merely the greatest thank you note in the history of the universe. And solid proof that caramel has superpowers.
